Categories are like Folders and Context Tags, but much more powerful, hierarchical and customizable. Categories are scoped for use within a topic type – project categories, service categories, note categories, etc.
Categories are not shared across different types of things (only tasks and projects share the same categories).
You should be using categories to group your items based on type for example. You can then place your items in their respective shopping lists and still view them in your list according to category. You can also view your shopping items in the “All Shopping Items” view based on category as well.
Categories are just one of many ways to view projects. As you have probably seen you can group projects by “Context”, “Status”, “Starts”, etc. Categories are a way to organize items within each topic, and we recommend using Context Tags when you want to go across topics.
Categories are managed in settings view as show below:
You can also hide a category from the above view.
The following views show how these “Log Entry Units” categories are used.
Similarly, the “Shopping Item Units” categories are also used differently as shown below:
You can add new categories above that will show up in the Shopping items views.
