Should I Get a New iPhone 6s or 6s Plus and What’s the Best Way to Buy It?

In case you’ve been on a deserted island over the past few days and you haven’t heard that the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus pre-orders start at midnight at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time on September 12 in the United States, we thought we would share this exciting news. If you don’t pick one up during pre-order, you’ll need to hit up a store within the next few weeks (expect a long line) if you want to get it quickly.

What’s New in the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus?

With this new iPhone, Apple is introducing “3D Touch,” which adds new “Peek and Pop” gestures. Now, when you press harder than usual on your iPhone, you can peek at email messages and other pieces of content. Furthermore, if you press even more, you can “pop” to new places.

You can watch the following video to get a look at the new iPhone 6s devices.

The key new features include:

  • 12-megapixel iSight camera [rear] (previously 8-megapixel camera)
  • 5-megapixel camera [front] (previously 1.2-megapixel)
  • 4K videos (previously 1080p HD video recording)
  • Rose gold color now available
  • “Live Photos,” which are essentially animated photos
  • New faster A9 64-bit chip (previously A8)
  • Stronger glass
  • Faster touch ID

Should I buy an unlocked phone, which is carrier-free?

Previously, Apple did not sell newly-introduced, unlocked, contract-free phones; however, you can now pre-order an unlocked iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. If you plan to purchase an unlocked iPhone from Apple, you will pay full price for your new phone. If you live in the United States and travel abroad often, this is a good choice for you. If you purchase an unlocked phone, you can choose the carrier you wish, most likely including pre-paid SIM cards and other typically more affordable plans, such as AT&T’s BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) plans.

Who are the carriers?

Apple, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint offer plans for your new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. You can generally check your eligibility through the Apple website or contact your carrier directly. Apple has introduced a new iPhone Upgrade Program, which allows you to finance your phones directly from Apple and upgrade every year if you agree to trade-in your device. However, it appears that this plan does not include Apple Care. You can read how the Apple plan compares to the other carriers (with side-by-side comparisons) in this helpful post by Tech Insider.

How do I check my eligibility?

Before you purchase your new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, check your eligibility. Below are some ways to get information quickly.

  • AT&T: Dial *639# (*NEW#) and you’ll get a text about your upgrade eligibility.
  • Verizon: Dial #874 and you’ll get a text about your upgrade eligibility.
  • Sprint: Text the word upgrade to 1311.

What are the price comparisons?

I gathered some handy links that outline the price comparisons of the different carriers:

9To5Mac also includes a great comparison table at their website.

Hope this helps you with making an iPhone 6s buying decision. Please let us know!
